Training & Band-Aid Devices

Training devices can be very useful and make training easier but I feel it is massively important to understand that these are not the solution! Using devices in-place of training will never yield the results you may be looking for and can cause both physical and mental harm to your dog in the long run.

Accountability, effort and dedication to proper training is the only way to go.

"Don't blame the device for lack of effort."

Travel Thoughts

Each and every day we experience moments of simplicity that can answer life’s most difficult questions. We simply have to open our mind’s eye and acknowledge them. This episode I just wanted to share one of my own personal experiences. The most difficult challenge when dealing with a behavior issue is stopping yourself from defeating yourself. Don’t give up when times become hard. Dedication and seeing your success will yield the greats results.

A Genetic Look Into The Evolution of Canine Behavior

What is domestication? The domestic dog dates back tens of thousands of years. However, there are no wild golden retrievers or Doberman Pinscher packs roaming the forests...so how did we get the German Shorthair pointer and Labrador Retriever from a Wolf or Coyote? The debate is still in the air today. Join us with special guest and personal friend of mine, Dr. Christos Suriano, to help us gain knowledge on past and current research and to discuss our own personal theories toward this discovery.

Understanding Trainers with guest Valerie Erwin

It’s absolutely wonderful when people research, read books, google methods and ask advice from friends and family. However, this can be a major hindrance towards success. If none of these avenues have satisfied your issues, and you reach out to a professional in the field. Please reserve your wealth of knowledge and open you mind to a different theory. Most techniques and methods have similarities on the surface but achieve different outcomes due to variations in application. Every dog is different, every environment is different, and every person is different. With understanding and dedication, you can reach the stars.

The Dangerous Foxtail

There are dangers all around us and its good to be aware of them. Sometimes the most dangerous things hide in plain sight. In this episode I share my personal encounter with the Foxtail plant.

The barbed seed heads of the Foxtail plant can work their way into any part of your dog, the nose, between the toes, inside the ears, eyes, and mouth. ...  The danger of Foxtail goes beyond simple irritation as it could embed and cause major infections, even blindness and deafness.

The Beautiful Bracco Italiano

The Beautiful Bracco Italiano

The Bracco Italiano has been called the oldest European pointer, and its history reaches back as far as the fourth or fifth century BC.

The Bracco, that’s B R A C C O, for all that have not heard of this breed, is a 55-88 pound hound looking pointer. If you haven’t heard of the breed you should definitely look it up online. Bracco’s make wonderful companions but require a lot of mental and physical stimulation. This breed is born to work the hunting fields. Their predatory drive is very high and they typically shine in the field. However, they require a bit of finesse with training. Traditional hunting methods tend to suppress the Bracco’s natural instincts.

This Episode of The Pack Animal Podcast I give a short story to support the trained hunting Bracco’s ability in the field with a scary test of nature!

Holiday Expectaions

With the holiday rapidly approaching we may be wondering what is best for our furry little family members. This is a very common question this time of the year and a great one at that. All dogs have different personalities. Some dogs are completely fine when introduced to a chaotic environment and some dogs simply shut down. In this short holiday episode, I give some advice that may help you to better understand what may be best for your dog and what trials and tribulations you and your dog may face within this kind of exposure.

Understanding Dominant and Submissive Behavior

Comment

Understanding Dominant and Submissive Behavior

We always hear the terms dominant and submissive being loosely used when describing our dogs behavior or to describe the method of training being applied. Understanding the natural balance of these two very important behaviors is incredibly important. Often the word dominant construes as aggressive and submissive construes as fearful. These are very different behaviors and are often confused. Healthy levels of aggression and fear are also natural behaviors of communication. However, forward aggression in many instances (NOT ALL) is a product of fear. Fear meaning lack of structure or communication both internal (within the pack), and external (the expectation of the stranger). Have a listen to episode 05 of The Pack Animal Podcast where we scratch the surface on a controversial topic.
